There
are 3 main variations of Texas Holdem, and
each of them has their own particular style...no
limit, pot limit and limit.
1. No Limit
This is the Cadillac of Texas Holdem. It's
also the game played at the WSOP.
No limit is considered by many to be the
true test of a poker players’ skill.
At anytime you can bet everything you have
in front of you. Get dealt AA, go all in
pre-flop. Get dealt 7/2o, go all in pre-flop.
It doesn’t matter. You can bet as
much as you want, whenever you want. This
game can get hairy quick, but is sure is
a lot of fun when you can go all in with
the nuts and some chumps call you down.
2. Pot Limit
Similar to No limit except the maximum you
can bet is whatever is currently in the
pot.
3. Limit
This game has a more structured betting
system. You have a ‘small bet’
and a ‘big bet’. In a limit
game ‘small bets’ are made in
the first 2 betting rounds (Pre-flop and
before the turn) the most you can bet or
raise is in small bet increments. After
the turn, the bets increase to the ‘large
bets’ which are typically 2x the size
of the small bet.
On Poker
Stars, the limits range from $.01/$.02
to $150/$300 bets.
These are the most common types of Texas
Holdem that you’ll see, and these
are the standard formats for all of the
online poker houses.
Don’t worry if this isn’t crystal
clear, you can play enough hands with play
money in each of these three categories
before you pony up your hard earned dollars.
Keep in mind that playing with play money
means EXTREMELY little in terms of how your
poker skills really stack up. Use the free
money games just to become familiar with
the software interface, betting rules and
flow of the game. Play-money and real-money
are a whole different monster. To be a consistent
winner at poker, you need to use sound poker
strategy and exhibit discipline and
patience.
Thanks and we'll see you at the tables!
