John
has been with the Atlanta Poker Club since
day one and he's one of the most consistant,
feared and respected poker players in the
APC...and a helluva guy to boot! Most of
you already know him as he is always hovering
atop the leaderboards and final tables and
you can Get to know John a little better
with this quick Q&A.
Q:
Do
you have a standard tournament strategy
that you would be willing to share with
other
APC members?
A:
Yes, I wouldn't mind sharing it. It;s kinda
like Green Bay Packers in the 1960's...everybody
knew what they were going to do. Hornumg
left, Taylor right, touchdown Boyd Dowler.
You knew it was coming but you couldn't
stop it.
Q:
What does it take to make it to the
final table of a typical APC event?
A:
Patience early. Stay away from a call that
could cripple your chip stack. Aggressive
pre-flop with a top hand. Good reads on
your opponents.
Q: If you had to describe
your style of play in 10 words or less,
what would you say?
A: Cautious early,
patience, manage chip stack til final table.
Q: What are the common
mistakes you see other players making in
the tournament?
A:
Over bet their hands pre-flop, make
bad calls, unable to read bluffs.
Q: How much has your
game improved since you began playing with
the APC?
A:
Difficult to say...my game flucuates.
I have long stretches where I'm out in the
first hour. Then come back and make final
tables on a consistant basis, then go back
into a slump.
With me, its the proverbial sine curve.
So I can't say that my game has improved...it
just falls into this pattern. I really can't
say why I have good success in the championship
games. It may be some higher level of concentration
kicking in.
Q: When you make it
to the final table, what other players do
you give the most respect to when they are
sitting there with you? (I.E, do you fear
any players?)
A:
Not fear. Players I respect are Bob,
Gary H., Joe L., Marc A. you and the Goat.
Daniel, Dion, T, Lee R and a few others.
Q:
Do you have a ‘Favorite Hand’?
A:
8-10 suited and Q-9 suited and of course....pocket
Aces (AND iI HATE POCKET J'S)
Q: Do you have any
words of wisdom for other APC’ers?
A:
Enjoy the game, make new friends and
have a blast.
Thanks for your time John and thanks for
your support over the past year and a half...
the APC couldn't ask for a more deserving
top player of the season.
- Some final comments from John...
If not for APC, I wouldn't have an awful
lot of friends down here. My wife &
I, believe it or not, are really on the
shy side & don't socialize very much.
I have made so many new friends & look
forward to poker nights more as a social
event.
I think I come out each night with varying
degrees of focus &, perhaps that why
I do better only when I have to.
I.E. -- in Season II, with one week to go,
I needed a top 4 finish to get into the
top 40 to qualify for the championship game.
I came in 3rd that night.
Four weeks ago I was like 90th @ SO CO &
then came on to 15th in points. Same in
Braselton where I was nowhere & then
came on to be 5th.
Performance wise, I am an inconsistant player.
It's only when the chips are down (no pun
intended) that I play well. That's why,
in my mind, I'm not that good a player over
the long haul. Only when my back is up against
the wall.
Bottom line is that if I never see another
final table, I'll still be out there enjoying
myself with some of the greatest people
I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
