Joe
Hachem defeated a record field
of 5618 Players in the 2005 World Series
of Poker and took home $7.5 Million 1st
place prize.
Joe is a native of Lebanon but moved his
family to Melbourne Australia in 1972, where
he still lives today. Joe won the largest
poker tournament in the history of poker
and once ESPN airs the final event of the
World Series of Poker he looks to become
one of the most well known poker players
on the planet.
Joe did not win his way in by playing in
an online qualifier, like the past two World
Series Winners, Chris Moneymaker and Greg
Raymer, who both won their seats by playing
at Poker
Stars.
Instead, Joe paid the $10k entry fee and
after he won he was courted by a handful
of top online poker rooms, with Poker Stars
winning out for an undisclosed sum.
He battled through the largest field of
poker players ever at the World Series of
Poker. It was over a solid week, 8 days
of intense, greuling, draining and exhaustive
poker and pressure.
Imagine playing 12 to 14 hours straight
of the most intense and high stakes poker
on the planet... and this man pulled it
off.
Even more impressive is that Joe nursed
a short stack for 11.5 hours at the final
table, avoiding confrontations that could
cost him his chance at winning the tournament...
carefully picking his spots and attacking.
The final three players at the table were
Joe Hachem, Steve Dannenmann, and Tex Barch.
Everyone who made the final table walked
away winning at least a million dollars.
Steve Dannenman, aka
"The Weeze" finished second
after outlasting some of the best poker
players on the planet and playing good poker.
Hachem flopped a straigt holding 73o and
Dannenman hit his Ace with an up and an
up and down straight draw on the turn. They
got all their chips in the middle and Joe
Hachem took home the 2005 World Series of
Poker Champion Bracelet and $7.5 million
dollars. Nicely done Joe.
If you want to play next year, you might
as well qualify through Poker
Stars, everyone else does. Here is a
Marketing
Code for Poker Stars and here is a list
of online
satellites for the WSOP at some other
sites.
Mike Matausow, aka Mike
the Mouth Matausow, was the favorite
going into the ending stages of the tournament
as he had a chip lead and by far the most
experience of the rest of the players, but
it wasn't mean to be. Mike busted out 9th
and took home $1,000,000 for his efforts.
I'm sure we will hear Mike's thoughts on
the hands he gets beat in on ESPN.
Joe Hachem Quick Facts:
He's the first Australian to win the WSOP
Championship event.
Here is how much Joe won (before taxes!)
A rare blood disorder forced Hachem to
retire from being a chiropractor because
it affected his dexterity. "I can tell
you I've made more money this week than
in many years of fixing people's backs,"
Hachem said.
Joe wouldn't enter the World Series of Poker
sooner because he wanted to wait until his
children were older before he jetted off
to Vegas.
